Vedic Way of Life
Life Ceremonies
In the Vedic tradition, the important moments of life are marked with special ceremonies called sanskaras. Each one blesses a new stage and helps the person begin it well.
Why ceremonies matter
A ceremony gathers family, prayer and intention around one moment. It reminds everyone that this step in life is sacred, and asks for blessings for what comes next.
The main life ceremonies
Traditionally there are sixteen. The best known are:
- Naming ceremony (Namakarana): a baby receives its name
- First food (Annaprashana): a child eats solid food for the first time
- First haircut (Mundan)
- Beginning of learning (Vidyarambha)
- Sacred thread (Upanayana): the start of formal study
- Marriage (Vivaha)
- House entry (Griha Pravesh): blessing a new home
- Last rites (Antyeshti): the final farewell
